BDI-3 Suite of Assessments

Given the multiple assessments within the BDI-3 Suite, descriptions and use cases for each assessment are listed below-

BDI-3 Developmental Complete

The New Battelle Developmental Inventory, Third Edition (BDI-3) is a comprehensive assessment that measures five areas of developmental milestones including:

  • Social Emotional (Personal-Social)
  • Communication
  • Adaptive
  • Motor
  • Cognitive

It is the only assessment on the market that measures these domains from birth to 7 years 11 months. It is by far the most holistic assessment on the market for early childhood and is used in multiple for its accurate way of assessing developmental discrepancies in children.

It can be used as a follow up to the administration of the screening test if specific areas come up as being problematic (labeled as “refer”), and can be used to cover developmental milestone assessment alongside foundational academic assessment with the BEAS.

Subscription Kits:

There are subscription kits users can purchase, which provide them with everything they need to utilize the BDI-3 Developmental Complete. The current subscription model is an annual subscription that renews at the initial rate. Furthermore, with a BDI-3 Developmental Complete subscription, users must use Riverside Score to score their administrations. Furthermore, Riverside Score is needed to generate comprehensive reports. There is no hand-scoring manual provided with a subscription kit.

If a prospective subscriber is interested in hand-scoring (and not Riverside Score), they would need to purchase a hand-scoring kit (see below).

Hand-Scoring Kits:

For users that do not want to subscribe and are seeking hand scoring they must purchase a hand-scoring kit. A hand-scoring kit comes with all they need to administer the test, in addition to a norms and conversions manual for scoring the assessment. Note that with the hand-scoring kit, users can access Riverside Score and online resources for one year only to try out the platform if they so choose. They then will lose access to Riverside Score and any other online features after the first year is up if they do not elect to renew access for the platform.

Battelle Early Academic Survey (BEAS)

Overview

New to the BDI-3 is an academic survey, the Battelle Early Academic Survey (BEAS) which assesses foundational skills in the areas of mathematics and reading. It serves as a holistic assessment for determining early skill proficiency and is also ideally suited for early childhood progress monitoring as students develop these critical skills. It is aligned with Common Core Standards related to foundational reading and math skills. The Common Core Standards can be reviewed here: Home | Common Core State Standards Initiative (corestandards.org).

The BEAS can be administered multiple times within a school year to a student and needs at least a 4 month interval between administrations (to minimize practice effects- any change or improvement that results from practice or repetition of task items or activities).

Age- 3 years 6 months through 7 years 11 months

Time- It takes approximately 10-30 minutes to administer, depending on whether the examiner administers one or both academic domains.

Use Cases

•Academic screening of children with developmental delays identified by the BDI-3

•Academic screening in general education settings

•Pre- and postintervention assessment to determine student growth

•Assessment of students transitioning from preschool to kindergarten

Subscription Kits:

There are subscription kits users can purchase, which provide them with everything they need to utilize the BEAS. The current subscription model is an annual subscription that renews at the initial rate. Furthermore, Riverside Score is needed to create a report when using the BEAS. There is no hand-scoring kit for the BEAS, and it can only be scored along with a subscription.
